About me & my skills

I am an experienced journalist, specialising in parenting and lifestyle and mainly working online. I currently edit the Supernanny site.

I originally studied at the Cardiff School of Journalism at the University of Wales before moving on to work in TV, producing many chat shows including GMTV and This Morning.

I’m the author of four non fiction books – Toddlers: An Instruction Manual How to Overcome Fear of Driving and most recently Social Media for Writers and Twitter for Journalists, Authors and Bloggers

You can see samples of my recently published features here

I also work as a career coach for people in media – you can see my coaching site here.

I founded and run the only online community for women in media, MediawomenUK, which has over 1100 members.

I also founded  and edit the UK’s only site for children who blog, KidsBlogClub. In 2013 I reached the final 3 of Vodafone’s Digital Heroes Award for my work supporting children’s literacy on KidsBlogClub.

I’m active in social media, with nearly 8K Twitter followers on my main account, plus another 15K on three other accounts I run, so 23K followers in total. My blog Opposable Thumbs has been nominated for numerous awards in the 9 years I’ve been writing it.

I live in a creaky old house by the sea in Brighton with my partner, two children and Dennis the grumpy Cat.

These are some of the skills I’ve picked up along the way:

  • Researching and writing features – including sourcing and interviewing experts and case studies
  • using content management systems
  • live web chats (both leading and administering) – I have been invited to be an expert panelist for several Guardian Careers live webchats.
  • writing SEO-friendly features
  • blogging and vlogging (video blogging)
  • commissioning blog posts
  • running an online community
  • using Twitter and Facebook to drive traffic to sites
  • setting up and running online competitions
  • product reviews
  • Agony Aunt column
  • public speaking
  • radio & TV broadcasting
  • book writing I also contributed the foreword to Freelance Writing by Linda Jones.

I can make cakes as well, but that’s more of an added bonus than a key skill.

You can find out more and read references from previous clients on my LinkedIn page.
